Ayaïro was born in Tokyo. She graduated from the Department of English at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and studied abroad at the University of British Columbia in Canada.
Working with “memory mediated through landscape” as a point of departure, Ayaïro begins her practice by visiting places that evoke a sense of nostalgia or subtle unease, standing there in person. Rather than simply depicting the scenery, she engages with the memories and sensations that are stirred there, searching for their visual form.
In her process, she draws upon on-site experiences and photographs she has taken as starting points. However, her aim is not to reproduce the visible scene. Instead, she selects elements according to the intensity of fragments and sensations that remain strongly in her memory, allowing an image to emerge. This process becomes an act of retrieving the once-ambiguous inner time and giving it contour.
Whether in places undergoing rapid change or in those shifting gradually, quiet layers of time that resonate with personal memory lie beneath the surface. Through landscape as a mediator, Ayaïro seeks to make these layers visible and to fix them as a singular image on the canvas.
