Born in Tokyo, Ayaïro graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies with a degree in English and studied abroad at the University of British Columbia in Canada.
Her work centers on the theme of “landscape and memory.” She creates paintings by responding to the memories and sensations that arise as she engages directly with a place.
As part of her process, she first visits locations that draw her interest and begins painting by following the memories and sensations that emerge there, deliberately avoiding logic or interpretation in the initial stage. Only afterward does she reflect on the resulting body of work, using language to understand and organize what has intuitively taken shape.
Within rapidly changing contemporary landscapes, Ayaïro turns her attention to the memories and sensations that persist quietly within the individual. While allowing herself to remain open to their ambiguity and fluidity, she seeks to give them a more tangible form through later articulation. The bold black outlines that characterize her work function as a means of giving contour to these uncertain sensations and grasping them more firmly.
By tracing her own personal memories, she also considers the possibility that the inner landscapes emerging in her work may resonate, at certain points, with the memories and sensations of others.
